The Habit of Reading

A habit that I developed when I was a kid was that of reading. Ever since I can remember, I have always been fascinated by comics and books. Even when I was a kid, I would be the geeky kid that stayed home after school with his nose stuck in a comic book while other kids were busy doing whatever other kids seemed to be doing during those years. Even though I lived in a small town in India, these books enabled me to wander into a fantasy land that sometimes consisted of mythological characters from Amar Chitra Katha or talking animals from Tinkle or super heroes from Marvel comics or even Archie, Betty (whom I believe I had a crush on at the age of 5), Veronica, Reggie, Jughead and the rest of the all-American crew. While I did have fun playing sports and spending time outdoors, books and comics would always be a part of my childhood. I picked up my reading habit from my mother who is also a voracious reader. Through the years, I have continued to read.....through the crazy teen years, through college, through my seven years in the United States. I buy books everywhere I go and remember where each one of them was bought. I believe I have been to most of the airports in the country and have bought books at every single one of them. When I look at the books I own, I see several distinct eras of my life where I read different genres. P.G. Wodehouse, R.K Narayanan, Shakespeare, Jeffrey Archer, James Patterson, and a whole host of others. Most recently, I have read Matt Reilly's work and am currently reading two books simultaneously, "The Face of Fear" by Dean Koontz, and "The Man" by Irving Wallace. The first one is about a series of brutal murders and the search for the killer, while the second is an amazing story about a black man who becomes the President of the United States and then is later impeached by people who are unable to stand the fact that they are led by a black man. It is a powerful book and ground-breaking, especially when you consider that it was written way back in 1964. It has also been made into a movie in 1972, with James Earl Jones playing the main character. It is a great read and I highly recommend it.

As and when I have some time, and when I am truly inspired by a book, I will review it and tell you all about it. I might even end up reviewing other things such as restaurants, hotels, airports, cities.......anything that fancies me during my extensive travels. So welcome to my blog. Hope you enjoy the ride as much as I am sure I will.
